John Banks, in honor of Michele Banks
John and Michele Banks have been lifelong residents and supporters of the El Dorado community. As children, John attended Skelly Elementary school while Michele attended Lincoln. Their paths first crossed at a friend’s birthday party in fourth grade. They attended El Dorado High School together, eventually becoming high school sweethearts, marrying in 1969, and enjoying 54 years of marriage.
Michele was an English, Drama, and Music teacher in USD 490 for fifteen years. After retiring from El Dorado High School, Michele found many ways to give back to the community. First and foremost, she was an active supporter and fierce champion of the fine arts at Butler Community College. She attended and supported many theatrical productions, and she loved performing on the BCC stage. The opportunity to perform in new plays written by her good friend and Butler theatre professor, Bob Peterson, as well as performing in shows such as Harvey, Bye, Bye Birdie, and Hello, Dolly!, fueled her creative spirit. She also came out of retirement to direct the BCC show choir, Headliners, during Valerie Mack’s maternity leave. The camaraderie, friendship, and artistry she found at BCC gave her great joy.
As an active member of Trinity Methodist Church, Michele directed the church choir for more than 35 years, exemplifying her faith through service and celebrating her love of music. Michele further served the community of El Dorado through her long involvement with Partners in Education, P.E.O, Chapter DS, Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Freya Club, and the El Dorado Chamber of Commerce.
Michele passed away in January 2024, but her legacy continues through Mrs. Banks Closet, a fund that addresses the needs of El Dorado students of USD 490, and the Michele Banks Fine Arts Scholarship Butler Community College Foundation. Michele was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and we continue to honor her love of the arts.
